About Transpiration:
Transpiration reflects on the entanglements that enrich and complicate our lives. In the midst of storm targets, geomagnetic activity, and digital alteration, these poems consider the possibilities for intimacy with the natural world around us and with each other. The pamphlet grieves for what has been left behind and what will be lost in the future through the actions of human hands. Yet life goes on: through the skin, the pulse, ‘so many different ways to breathe’.
“Transpiration is a taut collection of poems that strikes a compelling balance between linguistic ambition and wry anecdote, interrogating the limits of the lyric persona as well as language’s messy relationship to translating human and non-human history. In this pamphlet, a ‘grandfather is born in a sauna like so many others before’; it is ‘fucking stupid for a man to be so moved by dolphins’. This is writing that feels incredibly contemporary but also demonstrably aware of its inheritances, and MacLeod Davidson directs this precision towards the quiet and inescapable melancholy that feels intrinsic to witnessing our world’s shifting ecological tableau. Transpiration is a really impressive and promising debut from a very talented, very intentional poet.”
