Obsidian Showcase 2026
online
The Poetry Society presents a showcase reading introducing some of the most exciting up-and-coming Black poets in partnership with the Obsidian Foundation.
The culmination of a week-long writing and networking retreat held by the Obsidian Foundation this December, this Poetry Society showcase event introduces ten of the outstanding writers participating in the retreat, inviting them to present their latest work. They will read alongside Obsidian Foundation founder, Nick Makoha.
Obsidian Foundation provides opportunities for Black poets of African descent to develop their writing practice in a supportive, rigorous, and community-focused environment. The Poetry Society has held a showcase reading after each of the previous Obsidian retreats in 2020 and 2023. These have been memorable readings, introducing many of the writers who’ve since gone on to publish award-winning first collections. Don’t miss this chance to hear the very latest new voices. Nick Makoha is a Ugandan poet and playwright and based in London. His debut Kingdom of Gravity was shortlisted for the Felix Dennis Prize and nominated by The Guardian as one of the best books of 2017. His latest collection is The New Carthaginians (Penguin Poetry) which is shortlisted for the 2025 TS Eliot Prize.
