Avona
In 2025, a collection of local artists and makers in Bristol heard the call of their river struggling in the UK’s waterway pollution crisis.
They paid close attention to ancient folklore of their land on how the Avon Gorge was formed, and decided to honour the character of ‘Avona’ who is often overlooked in modern retellings. As both this female character and the Bristol River Avon are ‘voiceless’ but play a crucial part in the identity of the city, the artists have evoked the spirit of the feminine power of the river in a 10ft high and 10ft long puppet - Avona. She is now an animated figure for people to interact with and reengage with a once lost and now newly emerging story of the Rights of Nature Movement.
Avona is made of mostly natural materials with some glow-in-the-dark elements. She can swim, she can dance and she can process. She has taken part in many ceremonies near many rivers and hopes to travel to other communities that may not be able to access their local river or don’t feel safe enough to do so for whatever reason.
