Play with Gray: Expanding your Practice through Clay
Alasdair Gray Archive The Whisky Bond, 2 Dawson Road, Glasgow
Free creative workshop at AGA for Gray Day: Expanding your practice through clay
11am-1pm on 24th February 2026
Led by Rhona Warwick Paterson and Niamh Gordon
For the next event in the ‘Play with Gray’ series, The Alasdair Gray Archive invites you to a hands-on creative workshop exploring clay as a pathway to the imaginative unconscious. In collaboration with First Hand Studio, we’ll delve into playful, exploratory approaches to making.
The session will be led by artist and writer Rhona Warwick Paterson, who will guide participants through a series of practical exercises designed to expand creative thinking—ranging from clay meditation to oblique strategies. Throughout the workshop, we’ll work with prompts inspired by Alasdair Gray’s writing on landscape, terrain, and the mapping of cities.
You’ll also take part in a collaborative activity involving shared clay forms, learning how to move between linguistic and embodied modes of expression. Together, we’ll tap into the creative unconscious, step outside our comfort zones, and stretch our artistic practice. Come with curiosity and a willingness to experiment!
The workshop runs for two hours, with a short comfort break. Supported by SGSAH
No prior experience with clay—or with Alasdair Gray—is required.
Writers and non-writers alike are welcome, and the workshop may be of particular interest to writers looking to expand their practice beyond language-based forms.
