missed the boat is a Scotland-based poetry magazine for anyone who feels like it's too late.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

★ I am only accepting poetry submissions - any work that isn't poetry of some kind will not be considered. Any and all forms/types of poetry are welcome. However, any racist, sexist, homophobic/transphobic, or otherwise bigoted content will not be considered or tolerated. I will also not be accepting any fully or partially AI-generated work.

★ Each submission can contain up to 3 poems (all sent within a single document), and poems should be no more than 40 lines long.

★ Any work that has been previously published in a magazine/journal/book etc will not be considered. Work that has been self-published on personal social media or websites is not considered previously published and is eligible for submission. You will retain the rights to your work if it is accepted, but please credit Missed the Boat as first publisher if your work is published elsewhere afterwards.

Simultaneous submissions are totally fine, but please let me know if your work is accepted elsewhere before we get to it.

IS THERE A THEME?

★ There is no specific theme that your submissions have to adhere to. Any work considering the broad topic of 'missing the boat' is welcome but absolutely not required.

★ The only aspect of your submission which I do ask to be themed is the short bio which I ask for as part of the submission form, which will ask for a brief example of a time you feel you 'missed the boat' in your own life, alongside any other personal or publication-related details you wish to include.

IS THERE A FEE TO SUBMIT? WILL I BE PAID IF MY WORK IS ACCEPTED?

★ No and also, unfortunately, no. Submitting is free, but I also am not currently able to pay contributors with anything but gratitude and a free copy of the issue in which their work appears.

WHEN WILL I HEAR BACK FROM YOU?

★ Once the submission window has closed, I try to get back to all correspondance within 4 weeks. If you have not heard from me after 6 weeks and I haven't posted about any specific delay or change in response time on my social media, feel free to contact me through email or Instagram DM and chastise me for my general carelessness.
