Yellow Towers Community Project
We’re looking for artworks in any medium that respond to the wind turbine jacket foundations in the Port of Leith for a community art project website and a physical exhibition in 2027.
In early 2026, 18 mysterious yellow towers appeared in the Port of Leith. And from autumn 2026, one by one, they will begin to make their way back out of the port.
These wind turbine jacket foundations are massive, imposing, confusing, friendly, overwhelming, strange or comforting, depending on who you ask. We’re simply OBSESSED with them and everything they could represent. This project is an opportunity for artists and locals to respond to these creatures while we can still see them...before they head away to do their real jobs in Inch Cape.
Yellow Towers is now taking responses from the community to showcase on this website. We’re looking for artworks in any medium that respond to the wind turbine jacket foundations in the Port of Leith.
We are looking for paintings, drawings, writing, sculpture, textiles, audio-visual work, whatever you like! You don’t have to consider yourself an artist to participate. We’d love to hear your thoughts about the towers – will you feel sad when they go? Maybe you can’t wait for them to be gone? You can write to us, send audio recordings, drawings, anything. Let us know how you would like to be credited, or if you would like to remain anonymous!
We recommend that you visit the project website to see what others have submitted – it might just inspire you for your own contribution! There is also an "ideas" section of the website where you might find inspiration for your artistic response.
To submit your artwork, visit our website and the "submit" section, where a simple Google Form is linked.
Currently, the artwork on the yellow towers lives on our website, but we are also crowdfunding towards two physical exhibitions of this collection, at Out of the Blue Drill Hall and The Wee Museum of Memory. These would be from February 2027 – just in time to say goodbye before the last of the yellow towers move on to their final location. When you submit your artwork, please let us know if you'd like us to consider the pieces for the exhibition.
